The Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa’s Tax Planning workshop to tackle current changes in the industry
Johannesburg: The tax landscape in South Africa is vibrant and dynamic, with changes and amendments introduced regularly. In the financial services environment there are various tax avoidance structures and, if those shift to tax evasion, you are beginning to talk about money laundering – which results in a breach of the Financial Accountability & Corporate Transparency (FACT) recommendations. Furthermore, a change introduced by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) came into effect on 1 March 2022, requiring annuity providers to withhold a fixed tax rate higher than the rate applied based on the personal income tax table for some clients’ living annuity income from the 2022/2023 tax year.
Join the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI), on 29 November 2022, for a workshop on Tax Planning for an in-depth presentation on these topics. This will be a half-day online webinar to take place between 09:00 and 12:20, presented by Madeleine Schubert and Dr Marius Botha, CFP®.
Madeleine Schubert’s presentation, titled Blacklist and Russians – Tax Avoidance vs Tax Evasion, will discuss the purpose of the Financial Action Task Force and its recommendations which can result in countries being included on black and/or grey lists as non-compliant – especially with South Africa having been subject to a FACT review with the potential of being added to the grey list.
This will be followed by a presentation by Dr Marius Botha, CFP®, titled Living Annuities, which will address South Africa’s tax laws pertaining to living annuities, and look at the change aimed at reducing the tax shortfall clients may face at the end of the tax year by applying fixed tax rates calculated by SARS to living annuity income.
