Continuous Professional Development Requirements

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) refers to the ongoing process of lifelong learning that professionals engage in to enhance and maintain their skills, abilities, and knowledge relevant to their respective fields. CPD serves as a crucial element in ensuring the continued competency of our professional members of the FPI.

To support our members in meeting the CPD requirements for their FPI professional membership as well as complying with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority’s (FSCA) Board Notice 194 of 2017, the FPI provides a range of high-quality CPD webinars at no cost. These webinars are exclusively available to our professional members as part of their membership benefits. Furthermore, FPI hosts a series of paid flagship masterclass events throughout the year, which are all accredited for CPD purposes.

The FPI CPD cycle commences on 1 June each year and concludes on 31 May of the following year. Within this timeframe, CPD professional members are required to fulfill and document the following CPD obligations:

CFP® professional members:

  • Total of 35 CPD hours, with at least 20 hours being verifiable.
  • The 35 hours must include 5 hours dedicated to ethics and practice standards, 10 hours on general topics, and 20 hours focusing on technical subjects.

FSA® professional members:

  • Total of 25 CPD hours, with at least 20 hours being verifiable.
  • The 25 hours must include 5 hours dedicated to ethics and practice standards.

RFP® professional members:

  • Total of 20 CPD hours, all of which must be verifiable.
  • The 20 hours must include 2 hours dedicated to ethics and practice standards.

Tax Practitioners registered with SARS:

  • Total of 18 CPD hours, all of which must be verifiable.
  • The 18 hours must include 2 hours dedicated to ethics and practice standards, as well as 10 hours related to tax.

FPI Retired members:

  • Total of 15 CPD hours, all of which must be verifiable.
  • The 15 hours must include 5 hours dedicated to ethics and practice standards.
